Important Maintenance Tips for Engines Using DEF

by | Dec 26, 2018 | Diesel Fuel Supplier

Whether you operate a single diesel vehicle, or your entire fleet requires BlueDEF diesel exhaust fluid, maintenance is a vital consideration. Without the right maintenance regimen, diesel engines will suffer from wear and tear, leading to premature failure. That’s bad news for any business. Below, we’ll discuss some of the most important maintenance tips for engines that require DEF.

Create a Schedule

All vehicles in your fleet should be on a maintenance schedule. Taking a proactive step toward maintaining those assets is the first step toward maximizing your return on investment and ensuring usability for years to come. What should your maintenance schedule consist of? That depends on some factors, such as vehicle type, the environment in which it is being used, driver/operator habits, and even the industry in question.

At a minimum, it should consist of DEF fluid checks and top-offs, oil and filter changes, breather filter replacement, glow plug replacement (when necessary), and the like. Think basic maintenance that should be performed just to keep a diesel engine in good working condition.

Conduct Regular Inspections

A regular maintenance schedule is a good first step, but it is not enough. You’ll need to create a system that ensures operators/drivers can regularly inspect each vehicle. This should ideally be done at the start of a day/work shift when operators are fresher and are not rushing to wrap up their duties and get off shift. Inspections should cover both the vehicle’s exterior condition, as well as any operability issues. Ideally, you will have ongoing reports that detail vehicle condition, problems experienced, maintenance performed, and repairs conducted over time.

Ensure You Have a Constant Supply of BlueDEF Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Another important consideration is to make sure that your operation has a ready supply of BlueDEF diesel exhaust on hand. DEF depletes over time, through normal usage, and must be refilled regularly. Running an engine that requires DEF without it can result in premature wear and tear and even severe damage, so make sure that checking DEF is something that operators do regularly even if your vehicles are equipped with low DEF warning lights.
