Asthma Columbus MS is a disease that is chronic inflammatory illness that causes airflow obstruction through narrowing the airways. These symptoms are recurring characterized by sensitivity of the lungs and cause wheezing which is a whistling sound that happens every time the patient breathes. Additional symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness.

Asthma is one of the most common disorders children experience and statistical data as of 2011 showed that an estimated 7.1 million children under the age of 18 years old suffer with or from asthma. Asthma is possible caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Asthma has the possibility to be a life-threatening disease if it is not controlled properly. It has been found that each child is affected by asthma differently and experiences various triggers such as:

  • Allergic reactions to allergens in the air including pollen, feather, dust, food, mold, animal dander, or bugs
  • Respiratory infections
  • Colds and flu
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Exercise
  • Stress or excitement
  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Chest and neck tightened
  • Exposure to sudden changes in the air such sudden temperature change or cold air
  • Indoor and outdoor pollutants in the air including particle and ozone pollution
  • Secondhand smoke

The best treatments of asthma include avoiding any triggers, keeping an eye out on asthma symptoms, and using medications to control asthma for children of all ages. The pediatricians at the Children’s Health Center of Columbus Inc. will need to create an Asthma Action Plan and the parents will be given a written copy of that plan. For infants and toddlers with chronic asthma or wheezing issues may use different medications and they may be administered differently compared to children over the age of four years old. They may be prescribed a lower daily dosage with an asthma nebulizer and mask. Other medications such as Albuterol and Singulair inhaler may be used to help treat asthma symptoms.

Parents will need to look for the symptoms of asthma and take the child in to the doctor or to the hospital immediately for treatment. Asthma unfortunately cannot be cured but it can be controlled.
